How to Succeed at Wing Defence in Netball

It has long been joked that the position of wing defence is a somewhat superfluous role in the game of netball. First to be dropped in a game if numbers are short, the position is often said to be the best place to stick your ‘triers’ – the ones who have all the spirit but lack the talent for the other positions. Well, we’re here to tell you that this needn’t be the case. If you’ve landed yourself the position of wing defence, then turn that frown upside down as we’ve got some great tips to assist you in making the role your own and changing everybody’s opinion of it for good.

1. Sort Out Your Attitude

Wing defence is not a place for timid or unconfident players. To succeed in this role, you’ll need to give it a bit of ‘oomph’; you’ll need to be confident in getting up in your opponent’s face and shooting down their attempts to score. Now that’s not to say you need to be rude or overly aggressive, but it can never hurt to get a little competitive for this role. If you need inspiration for the right way to act, be sure to check out a netball drill training video or two for inspiration.

2. Don’t Forget the Offence

As the role suggests, defence is an integral part of your job. However, that’s not to say you should forget about the offence. In fact, when implemented correctly, wing defenders can be a crucial part of a winning attack.
